Tuesday, August 25th, 2015

parlortricks_front_450

myplasticheart is proud to present Parlor Tricks, an exhibition featuring new works by San Francisco duo doubleparlour. Specializing in handcrafted resin sculptures, they will be introducing a cast of new and mysterious characters highlighting their propensity for the odd and fantastical.

“The theme is inspired by magic and the art of deception. There are magicians who carefully guard their secrets. The smiling assistants hold their breath as danger gliders past so close. Carnival performers display feats that amaze and baffle the crowds.” -doubleparlour

About doubleparlour
Founded in November 2007, doubleparlour is Ernie and Cassandra Velasco. They are a husband and wife artistic collaboration living in San Francisco, CA. Cassandra has a B.A. in Fine Art from Humboldt State University and Ernie is a self taught artist.

doubleparlour produces work in a variety of mediums; however, their primary focus is on making handformed sculptures and embellished cast resin figures. The work includes a broad range of characters including animal hybrids, mutated humans, and anthropomorphic figures. Their work has been described as “unsettling,” “cute yet creepy,” and “disillusioned children.”

Please join us for the opening reception on Saturday September 12th 2015 7-10pm. Both artists will be in attendance. Exhibition runs through October 8th 2015.

Metal and Fur – New Work by Philip Lumbang and ChrisRWK opens August 8th

Tuesday, July 28th, 2015

metalandfur_IG

myplasticheart presents Metal and Fur, featuring the work of artists ChrisRWK and Philip Lumbang where the melding of their unique styles bring together an east coast meets west coast collaboration. Both share similar influences ingrained in a common graphic/illustrative style that is most notably demonstrated in many of the murals and walls both have adorned over the years in the streets of NY to LA. Philip whose iconic Awesome Bear character is often seen on walls and abandoned lots in downtown Los Angeles helps to spread Phil’s message of fun and happiness along the way. Chris started doing graffiti as a kid growing up in Staten Island and has evolved his ominous character Robots Will Kill. The two artists bring their collective influences to the table where they explore the dichotomy as well as parallels in their work with solo pieces as well as fully collaborative works. Through this joint endeavor you will see a growth in their visual verbiage and a willingness to come out of their comfort zones.

“When I was asked about doing a two man show at myplasticheart I was excited. I’ve always loved showing at MPH and the crowd. When they mentioned having the other person be from the West Coast and mentioned Philip I was definitely amped. I’ve always loved his work and felt it would be a great pairing. We both have a quirky sensibility to our work that I feel appeals to a wide audience.” – ChrisRWK

“I remember our first conversation about the show we had a few months back; I told [Chris] ‘I want to try something different’ and at the time I had no idea what that meant. Over the course of the next 3 months I continued to push myself to paint everyday looking for something new. I finally found what I was looking for, taking all my strengths and overcoming weaknesses I have created some of the best paintings I have ever done. These paintings tell the story of my transition to becoming more of a painter with a new focus on narrative.

This show serves as an introduction to a new style that is pretty much untested. I want to keep pushing myself and the work I create while still keeping the same message of peace, love and happiness.” – Philip Lumbang

Please join us for the opening reception on Saturday August 8th 2015 7-10pm. Exhibition runs through Sept 6th 2015.

We will be giving away limited edition ChrisRWK x Philip Lumbang totebags to the first 25 attendees who ask for it. The rest will be available for purchase at the opening.

We will also be one of the featured exhibitions at this year’s LoMan Arts Festival in celebration of street and mural art. Learn more about it at www.lomanartfest.org

myplasticheart presents our annual collaboration with creative documentarians Studio Miners. This year we delve into nostalgic 80’s skate culture with a tribute to the influential skateboard graphic arts scene prevalent at the time.

In our travels as the Studio Miners, we seek out collectors, those who have an itch to surround themselves with the sometimes wacky and weird and often inspiring and nostalgic. The collection we run into most frequently, whether limited to a handful or an entire room, is vintage skateboards. So many of our peers look to the designs of VCJ, Jim Phillips, and Pushead (to name a few) from influential 80s skate companies like Vision, Santa Cruz, and Powell Peralta to draw inspiration for today’s paintings and products. Our latest curatorial effort, Thrashin’, is a tribute to those significant graphics re-imagined by over 15 of our favorite artists, so this April, get ready for some of the raddest, totally gnarly graphics to bring you back in time – Live to thrash, dude!” – Studio Miners

About Studio Miners
The Studio Miners are Evoker and Team Sweet. On a trip to Florida in early 2011, the two swapped stories of previous visits to intriguing and inspiring spaces. They both had made it a habit to wander into or find invitations to these magical places. As the conversation went on, they decided it would be for the best to collect their efforts and start a website dedicated to documenting the wonderfully exciting world of artists, collectors and creatives of all kinds.
