Today we are taking a look at some sneak previews of Kelly Denato’s work in the New Moon 2012 show. If you have a look over at Kelly’s website, you can see she is a multifaceted artist, creating everything from paintings to soft sculptures. Her work spans mediums and she is prolific in her efforts, so it is no surprise she created more than one piece for this show. Have a look below at the intriguing images of this Brooklyn-based artist’s work and read on for a mini-interview in which she talks about her fascination with horses, her zodiac sign and her pieces in the show.
What zodiac sign have you chosen to represent? And why?
I chose the Year of the Horse mostly because, according to the zodiac, that’s my sign. I’ve always loved horses, loved drawing them, riding them, patting them, and giving them apples. They are big, soulful, hardworking animals – what’s not to like really? I had an Encyclopedia of the Horse book when I was younger. It had the whole breakdown of anatomy in there, including transparency overlays of nerves, muscles, bones – it fascinated me. I learned a lot from drawing from that book. Not much of which is visible in my work today – ha.
Tell us a bit about your piece and the process for creating it.
I’ve done several pieces for the show – A painting, 2 mixed media relief images, and 3 drawings. The reliefs and drawings are representations of the 5 elements of the horse sign.
The painting is of a relationship of the Horse and the Dragon. According to some of my research, Horse and Dragon have a very passionate dynamic. My painting is a representation of that dynamic – the two animals floating off in a passionate embrace. I liked this image because, I was born the Year of the Horse and this is the Year of of the Dragon; it’s a very hopeful and optimistic take on my embrace of this new year and, hopefully, its embrace of me.
What is your zodiac sign and do you think it is accurate?
That’s tricky – like any and all astrology, there are points that seem to be made for you and others that really miss the mark. For example, “Horses thrive when they’re the center of attention” or “Horses enjoy career positions in which they can interact with others” – honestly I can’t think of things that cause me more anxiety than those situations. But then, this snippet about my Elemental Horse sign (Earth) – “Earth Horses will work to meet their goals, no matter how long it takes. They’ve got the ability to view situations from all perspectives and this ability is especially useful when it comes to making decisions. They’re very adaptable and they’re funny too.” – feels pretty representative of me. I mean for the most part anyway- at least I hope I’m funny.
